Salt Lake City To Monument Valley, Canyonlands, Arches Two DayTour
Itinerary
Day 1 - Salt Lake City to Moab - 234 mi / 376.51 km
Map | Like all of our tours this is a small group trip. Our guides are very knowledgeable about the areas you travel through, as well as the geology, traditions and customs of the local people. Feel free to ask any and all questions!
And as with all our tours, there are frequent stops to take photos and admire the views. It is your tour - make yourself at home!
You will be picked up at your downtown Salt Lake City hotel for the trip along Interstate 15 to south eastern Utah. To the south of Provo we head east over Spanish Fork Canyon - a spectacular mountain pass - before dropping down the other side to an area where the outlaw Jesse James and his gang used to operate.
There are comfort stops on the way, and at Moab there is a half hour break to enable you to stretch your legs and grab a bite to eat. |
Day 1 - Moab to Monument Valley - 146 mi / 234.91 km
Map | There is great scenery on the road between Moab and Monument Valley, with any number of interesting rock formations, the best known of which is Mexican Hat.
On the way you will start to see the mesas and buttes for which the area is so well known. |
Day 1 - Monument Valley tour - About two hours
| Up next is a two hour tour of Monument Valley, conducted by a Navajo guide, in an off road vehicle. Visitors love to see the buttes, mesas and other sandstone formations that are so prevalent in the Monument Valley area. Monument Valley is actually not really a valley at all, but a relatively flat plain surrounded by red cliffs, with the buttes, as well as the remnants of ancient volcanoes, towering from the earth.
For fans of old western movies, Monument Valley is the epicenter of the west, with many great cowboys and Indians films having been shot in the area. The familiar rock shapes can be seen from many miles away, with the really great scenery to be seen on the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, which straddles the Utah/Arizona border.
Amongst the sites that your tour will likely take in are movie locations, 1000 foot monoliths, rug weaving, and, of course, the famous monuments are visited.John Ford Point at Monument Valley |
Day 1 - Monument Valley to Moab - 146 mi / 234.91 km
Map | The road from Monument Valley to Moab passes alongside several of the mesas and buttes for which the region is so well known.
The scenery is great, with Mexican Hat being another well known landmark that is visible from the road. The night is spent in Moab. |
Day 2 - Arches National Park - About four hours
| Arches is a park that has the wow factor! Because it is not close to any major city, or freeway between two cities, it is not as well known as other national parks. It is, however, just a couple of miles outside Moab.
You will be amazed at the assortment of arches, fins and spires inside the park. In fact, most of the world's natural arches are to be found here.
If you would like to, you can spend a lot of time outside the vehicle, walking on trails and getting up close and personal with some of the arches and other rock formations. If you prefer not to do that you can also get a good view of just about everything by standing next to the vehicle.
The first stroll we like to do is down Park Avenue, with towering fins and slabs of rock everywhere you look. This is an easy, predominantly downhill walk, that should take 30 to 45 minutes. |
| We will stop at Balanced Rock for photographs, and also drive up to Windows Arches, where you can take an easy walk all the way up to both of the windows. You can expect to see many other arches and rock formations while in the park, and we will stop often to take photographs and admire the views.
Delicate Arch is Utah's state symbol, and the most famous arch of them all. There is not going to be enough time to hike up there but if you have the energy for a steep climb we can take you to an overlook. |
Day 2 - Canyonlands - About 3 1/2 hours
| Canyonlands is a jewel in the national park system that is also one of the system's best kept secrets. As with Arches, it is also far away from a major city and the main freeways. Canyonlands is, however, close to Moab and we will be visiting it this afternoon.
The park is divided into three sections: Island in the Sky, Needles and the Maze. We'll be going to the first mentioned, because, as the name suggests, it is situated high up with fantastic views over the canyon country all around it.
Once at Island in the Sky we will show you the dramatic vistas that seem to stretch on forever. There will also be the opportunity to take some short walks, time and energy permitting. |
Day 2 - Another way of doing it ...
| Instead of going to Arches first, we may do Canyonlands first, and then Arches. It really depends on what our guests want to do. |
Day 2 - Moab to Salt Lake City - 234 mi / 376.51 km
Map | The route heads north, traveling through the Utah desert, towards the small towns of Price and Helper, where we climb up over Spanish Fork Canyon. There is a long drop down the mountain on the other side, where we pick up the freeway to Salt Lake. |
