Details
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone North Rim trail is one of the most beautiful hikes you can take anywhere! Think about it - two major waterfalls and some smaller ones, one beautiful river, a huge canyon and a trail that wanders in and out of a forest! We have two starting locations for this hike. We can either pick you up in West Yellowstone, or you can meet us at Canyon Village. The price is the same. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone North Rim hike is about 3.3 miles or 5.3 kilometres long, without the two optional detours we like to take on the hike. It is difficult to speculate how long it will take, as that really depends on how long we pause to admire the views along the way, and whether we do the optional detours. As a very rough guide, allow about 2.5 to four hours. The hike starts at a bridge over the Yellowstone River, from where we make our way alongside the river to the brink of the Upper Yellowstone Falls, which are easily accessible. There are some great views of the river along the way. The trail makes its way in and out of the forest, passing by the little known Crystal Falls, before meeting up with the trail down to the brink of the Lower Yellowstone Falls. This is the first of two optional side trails we can take. The trail down is awesome, and the view at the bottom is even better but ... the hike back up is steep and long, and may be not be suited for everyone. If you prefer not to do it, we can continue on the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone north rim hike, without going to the brink of Yellowstone's Lower Falls. Your guide will lead you along the rim trail, with views of the canyon often coming into sight, until we get to the first of the three main vantage points, Lookout Point. In addition to admiring the expansive vistas at Lookout Point, we can take the second of the two detours, this time to a great overlook of the Lower Yellowstone Falls. Once again, the trail back up is steep, and we do not have to do it. The next main area where we will stop and soak in the scenery is the aptly named Grand View Point. A short distance after Grand View Point we start ducking into and out of the forest, while still following the canyon, until we reach Inspiration Point. After admiring the scenery, we have two choices to get back to where we started. Your guide can cycle back to the vehicle on a bicycle we would previously have left at Inspiration Point, or, if you'd like to do the trail in reverse, you can do so as an add-on to this hike. Please take a look at the two videos we have of this hike. One is the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone north rim hike highlights, and the other is the complete Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone north rim trail.
