There is a new and much better version of this tour!

    Day 1  -  Las Vegas to Zion National Park  -  159 mi / 255.83 km  -  2 3/4 hours
    Map
    Map
This tour runs every day during the summer months. It runs less frequently in the shoulder season. The days and dates it operates can be seen in the calendar at the top right of this page.

Pick ups take place from the Las Vegas Strip at about 6.15 a.m. If there are enough people in the downtown area, we will also pick up at one central downtown location. Should you have to take a taxi or bus to meet us, we will reimburse you a maximum of $10 against the receipt.

Like all of our tours this is a small group trip. The average number of people last year was only eight. Please remember that our guides are very knowledgeable about the areas you travel through, as well as the geology, traditions and customs of the local people. Feel free to ask any and all questions!

We will travel north up Interstate 15, crossing into the desolate Arizona Strip, before heading up the Virgin River Gorge and into Utah. The route is picturesque in parts, and we will stop briefly in the Gorge to take pictures. There will be a comfort stop at either the small southern Utah town of St. George, or the even smaller one of Hurricane.
    Grand Canyon trip
    Day 1  -  Zion National Park  -  About 1 3/4 hours
Zion is Utah's most popular National Park, and its story is one of rock and water.

We will take a leisurely drive through the park, stopping frequently to take photographs and enjoy the scenery. The road goes past the Great Arch of Zion, which is a natural photo stop.

Our route will take us up a series of switchbacks and through an incredible tunnel that has been blasted into the rocks. With any luck we may see some big horn sheep on the way. We'll leave the park at the less traveled east exit, which most visitors don't even get to see.
    Zion trip
    Day 1  -  Zion National Park to Bryce Canyon  -  75 mi / 120.68 km  -  About 1 1/2 hours
    Map
    Map
Going through Zion we have climbed up to the top of a plateau, and we'll drop down a little, through the pygmy forests of southern Utah, prior to climbing up again to Bryce. The road to Bryce is a particularly scenic one, through picturesque, rural countryside, first next to the Virgin River, and then alongside the Sevier River.

Bryce Canyon is situated at altitude, at over 8000 feet (almost 2500 metres), and it can be cold, even though Vegas and Zion are hot. Please check the weather forecast before you leave and bring appropriate clothing.
    Day 1  -  Bryce Canyon  -  About 2 1/2 hours
Many who have seen both Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon tell us that Bryce is far more spectacular. You will marvel at the weirdly shaped hoodoos, in an amazing array of colorful hues.

Bryce is not really a canyon, but a large amphitheatre carved out of a variety of rock types. There are three main viewpoints overlooking Bryce, and we will go to all three: Sunset Point, Inspiration Point and Bryce Point.
    Day 1  -  Bryce Canyon to Page (on the shores of Lake Powell)  -  154 mi / 247.79 km  -  2 3/4
    Map
    Map
It's time to leave Bryce, and travel to Page, on the shores of Lake Powell. The road goes through the small southern Utah town of Kanab, before passing alongside the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.

Lake Powell comes into view from time to time as we approach Page.
    Day 1  -  Horseshoe Bend  -  About 75 minutes
Time - and energy - permitting, our guide will lead a hike to Horseshoe Bend, which is a spectacular Colorado River overlook, viewed through the canyon walls far below. The trailhead is a short distance outside town. Please bring a good pair of walking shoes with you.

The hike is a little less than half a mile or .65 of a kilometer. There is a fairly steep uphill section over loose sand to start the hike, and on the way back you have to go up the other side of the hill to return to the vehicle. We provide bottles of water so please grab one or two as it is almost always hot, even in the late afternoon.
    Day 1  -  Page
You will spend the night in Page, in the Quality Inn (www.qualityinnpage.com) and are on your own for dinner. A hot breakfast buffet will be available tomorrow morning.
Lake Powell bus Lake Powell transportation Page transportation Page bus
    Day 2  -  Page area - Antelope Canyon  -  About 75 minutes
You will be getting up bright and early this morning, for an off road tour to Antelope Canyon, one of the most striking slot canyons known to man. The tour is led by a Navajo guide.

A slot canyon is a narrow canyon sliced through a mesa by the forces of nature. Some canyons measure less than a yard across at the top, but drop a hundred feet or more from the rim to the bottom. Slots are cut and scoured by water and wind, with the striations of the sandstone becoming almost incandescent.

From within you will see a palette of colors transmuted by light filtering down from above and bouncing from wall to wall. Antelope Canyon can only be visited using the services of an authorized Navajo Nation guide.
    Day 2  -  Your choice!
You now have the option of taking a flight to Monument Valley, followed by a Navajo led off road tour of Monument Valley. From there you will fly to the Grand Canyon. Air tours of Monument Valley, Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon are included.

If you choose not to do this you will take a scenic drive to the Grand Canyon.

Details of both are provided below.
Day 2  -  Page to Monument Valley  -  About an hour
If you decide to take the Monument Valley tour, along with the air tours, your guide will take you to the small Page airport for a flight to Monument Valley. On the way there you will fly over the beautiful Lake Powell, with its golden canyons and incredibly blue waters. On most days the pilot will detour over Rainbow Bridge before overflying the Monuments and landing right in the heart of Monument Valley.

Everyone gets a window seat on the plane.
    Day 2  -  Monument Valley  -  1 1/2 to 2 hours
Up next is a 1 1/2 to two hour tour of Monument Valley, conducted by a Navajo guide. Visitors love to see the buttes, mesas and other sandstone formations that are so prevalent in the Monument Valley area. Monument Valley is actually not really a valley at all, but a relatively flat plain surrounded by red cliffs, with the buttes, as well as the remnants of ancient volcanoes, towering from the earth.

For fans of old western movies, Monument Valley is the epicenter of the west, with many great cowboys and Indians films having been shot in the area. The familiar rock shapes can be seen from many miles away, with the really great scenery to be seen on the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, which straddles the Utah/Arizona border.

Amongst the sites that your tour will take in are Anasazi ruins, petroglyphs, movie locations, 1000 foot monoliths, rug weaving and Indian hogans. The famous monuments are visited as well as many rock windows and arches of unique shapes.

Time permitting you can buy Navajo souvenirs and jewelry.

Day 2  -  Monument Valley to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon  -  About an hour
Climbing into your airplane you will leave the Monuments behind as you fly towards the Grand Canyon. The flight includes a short air tour of the Grand Canyon, before landing at the South Rim airport, where you will meet up with your guide and any members of the group who have not taken the Monument Valley tour.
    Day 2  -  Page/Lake Powell to the Grand Canyon  -  138 mi / 222.04 km  -  2
    Map

If you decide not to do the Monument Valley and air tours, your guide will take you to the Grand Canyon by road. The route goes past the Cameron Trading Post, one of the best stores of its kind in the West. You can get all sorts of southwestern jewelry, Native American souvenirs and artwork here.

We will enter the Grand Canyon at the much less used east entrance, and stop at the Desert View Watch Tower, where you will get your first views of the Grand Canyon. The Desert View Watch Tower is an amazing building that was constructed on the edge of the Canyon, with the interior covered in Hopi (Indian) artwork.

Day 2  -  South Rim of the Grand Canyon  -  About 2 1/2 hours
The group that did the Monument Valley tour will be picked up at the tiny Grand Canyon airport and reunited with the rest of the tour party. You will be taken to some of the best vantage points to enjoy the never ending vistas. These include Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Bright Angel Lodge. There is time to stroll around, enjoy the views, take pictures, buy some souvenirs, and grab yourself a bite to eat.
    Day 2  -  Grand Canyon to Las Vegas  -  276 mi / 444.08 km  -  5 hours
    Map
    Map
After exploring the Grand Canyon we will head south, to return to Las Vegas and end the tour. If we're in a smaller vehicle, it may be possible to go over Hoover Dam on the way back, but mini buses are not permitted over the Dam Wall.

    Thanks for joining us!
