Details
The hike from Cave Falls to Bechler Falls follows first the Fall River and then the Bechler River, passing the confluence of the two rivers along the way. The Bechler area is known for its waterfalls, and there are more cascades and waterfalls on this hike than on any other anywhere in Yellowstone! You will have an opportunity to get really close to both Cave Falls and Bechler Falls! As a bonus, on the way back we'll visit Mesa Falls, a beautiful and much larger waterfall than either Cave Falls or Bechler Falls! Cave Falls is located in the southwest portion of Yellowstone, and cannot be accessed from the main part of the park. It is almost a two hour drive from West Yellowstone, which is the closest gate to the main part of Yellowstone. The trip there is pretty, though, passing through first the Gallatin National Forest and Island Park, before descending into Ashton, Idaho, through the Targhee National Forest. There are good views of the west side of the Grand Teton mountains, if the weather isn't bad, after Ashton. We'll leave civilization behind as we travel alongside the potato fields, with the road changing to dirt. Shortly before we reach Cave Falls, we'll pass the turnoff to the Bechler Ranger Station, from where overnight hikers make their way to the Lone Star trailhead, amongst others. We'll spend about three to 3.5 hours on the hike, including a sack lunch which we will enjoy at at a picnic spot at Cave Falls. The trail itself is about 2.5 miles roundtrip, or four kilometres. You can meet us in either West Yellowstone or Ashton.
